Both Meg and Nick moved back to Brooklyn unexpectedly in the middle of the pandemic, right at the beginning of 2021. They matched on Bumble at the end of May, and met at a bar called Grand Army for their first date, around the corner from Meg’s Boerum Hill apartment. They ordered cocktails. Nick got Meg talking about her job and the news and why she left San Francisco, and Meg peppered Nick with questions about Minneapolis and art school and the Knicks (oh god, she was going to have to learn a lot about the Knicks). They laughed a lot. It was easy.

Early dates felt like a love letter to Brooklyn. Long walks through Park Slope and Prospect Park to Nick’s, and through Gowanus back to Meg’s. Slices from Caruso’s eaten on the stoop. Trips to Red Hook for Ikea and lobster rolls and beers at Sunny’s Bar. Picking out books they didn’t need at Greenlight and Books Are Magic. Burgers at Long Island Bar after a walk along the promenade.
Taking the ferry to Governors Island, a week or two after meeting, Nick remembers Meg resting her head on his shoulder. They were so comfortable with each other right away. Bonding over a shared love of light-roasted coffee, they settled into mornings beginning with a hot Chemex and one of Meg’s many mugs. Evenings were spent grocery shopping and cooking together: dan dan noodles, great pots of Rancho Gordo beans, focaccia pizza. They shared their creative sides too, with Meg spending hours at the pottery studio while Nick drew basketball players at his drafting table. Meg knew Nick felt at home with her when he decided to rearrange her apartment a few months in. It was cozier.

They started traveling together: to Long Island to spend time with Meg’s family, to California, to their old San Francisco haunts, then down to Big Sur and Monterey. They drove cross-country from Minneapolis to Cincinnati to visit with Nick’s family. They hiked the Adirondacks, swam in Loon Lake, explored Burlington, Vermont, and Portland, Maine, on road trips. They always had coffee in hand, from some café Meg had done extensive research on, listening to podcasts at her insisted-upon 1.5x speed.
They started talking about the future. Nick proposed to Meg on eclipse day, April 8, 2024, a few months after they picked out a ring together. They’re so excited for their wedding, to celebrate with all of their favorite people, and can’t wait to continue building their life together.

They also can’t wait to get a dog. 🐶
